Section Head, Adult Epilepsy - Department of Neurology

The Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for Section Head, Adult Epilepsy. An endowed professorship and recruitment package totaling $5 million is available for highly qualified candidates.

The Section Head, Adult Epilepsy reports directly to the Department Chair and will have significant leadership responsibility to oversee all administrative and financial matters and to define and implement the educational, research/scholarly, and clinical service missions of the section.

Comprised of eight faculty members, the Adult Epilepsy Section provides comprehensive clinical care using cutting-edge technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with seizures and epilepsy. The section has contributed to significant advances in the field of clinical epilepsy, including multimodality neuroimaging studies with functional MRI, PET, and ictal SPECT, intracranial EEG including robotic stereotactic placement of depth electrodes, and use of EEG for detection and characterization of seizures.

In close collaboration with neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and neuropsychologists, the epileptologists offer a complete range of diagnostic and treatment options, including antiseizure medications, implantable seizure-control devices and surgery. The Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is a certified Center of Excellence and is the largest epilepsy surgery center in the region with a twelve-bed epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). Long-Term Video Monitoring patient days exceed 3000 annually. The center is classified as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, with the highest level of patient care standards for the treatment of epilepsy. At the time of recognition, it was one of only three epilepsy centers in the nation to receive specific Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) certification for treatment of epilepsy.

The Department of Neurology is one of the premiere neurology departments in the country, with 170 faculty and over 1,000 employees. It ranks third in the nation in total NIH funding ($79 million) and is consistently ranked by both U.S. News & World Report and HealthGrades for clinical excellence. Clinical care is provided at multiple sites in the St. Louis region including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and the Center for Advanced Medicine. The department is home to two multi-disciplinary centers; the Hope Center, which studies neurodegeneration and nerve cell death, and the Knight Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. The Knight Center houses the internationally renowned Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network (DIAN) clinical trials unit, which is funded by both private industry and public funding sources and serves as a model for the use of personalized medicine in clinical trials.

Qualified candidates will possess an MD, DO or MD/PhD, board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), be certified in epilepsy or neurophysiology by the ABPN, and holding, or qualified to obtain, an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Missouri are required. The Section Head will be a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at the rank of Associate Professor or above, be an accomplished clinician educator with strong leadership skills, and possess a track-record as an independently funded research scientist. The Section Head must be able to function at a high managerial level in a complex health care organization.
