PRACTICE DESCRIPTION:

Abington Neurological Associates, Ltd. is an independent private neurology practice in Abington, Pennsylvania. It is affiliated with Abington Jefferson Hospital.

The practice was started in 1968 and now includes eight full-time and three part-time physicians. All are certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and have fellowship training and board certification in one or more of the following: clinical neurophysiology, sleep, stroke, headache, movement disorders, epilepsy, electromyography, and neuromuscular medicine. We have an active and growing research division. Our staff includes two Advanced Practice providers who aid in outpatient and inpatient care.

Abington Neurological Associates has one main clinical office across the Abington Jefferson Hospital. In addition, we staff Abington Jefferson’s Neuroscience Center with specialty clinics for sleep, headache and multiple sclerosis. The physicians normally work at one location on any particular day; occasionally, travel between two sites is required for office meetings and conferences.

Abington-Jefferson Hospital (AJH) is a fully accredited, not-for-profit, 600-bed regional teaching hospital. With more than 34,000 inpatient admissions annually, AJH is a major regional referral center for stroke intervention, cancer care, cardiac care, and surgery (including open heart, orthopedic, and neurosurgery). The hospital has the only level II trauma center in Montgomery County, with more than 80,000 visits annually. Abington-Jefferson has a robust neuroscience program providing neurosurgery, neurovascular, and neurocritical care services. Abington Jefferson Hospital has multiple accredited residency programs, including internal medicine, family practice, general surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology. Residents from other institutions in the Philadelphia region also do rotations at AJH in internal medicine, orthopedics, urology, neurosurgery, and rehabilitation medicine. Physicians from our practice are involved in teaching internal medicine.

While ANA is a private practice, there is also an opportunity for a faculty appointment within the Neurology department of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. One of our physicians staffs a hospital-based neurology clinic three mornings per month, six months out of the year.

Services provided in the hospital’s Neurosciences Laboratory include sleep studies, EEG, and transcranial Doppler (vascular) studies. The neuroscience inpatient unit also offers long-term inpatient EEG monitoring.

Abington Neurological Associates handles about 90% of the hospital's inpatient neurological work. We provide consultation services. We do not have a primary service. Emergency stroke calls are covered by the Neurovascular service. Our inpatient work includes consultations and follow-up, emergency room coverage, EEG and evoked response interpretation, sleep studies and evaluation, inpatient EMGs, and transcranial Doppler.

We always have one physician on 24-hour a-day call for three or four-day shifts, covering hospital patients and night calls. The transitions take place on Mondays and Fridays at 5 pm. The physician covering Monday through Thursday evening will have a day off the following Friday. A second physician is assigned to help in the hospital every weekday, doing consultations for a half-day, “short call”. Our physician extenders assist with inpatient work on weekdays and most weekends. They help with seeing most hospital follow-ups in the out-patient setting.

Our practice is involved in several clinical trials with various pharmaceutical and government agencies, including the National Institute of Health. Our studies cover a wide range of diseases, including dementia, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and migraine. Since 2008, the trial center has worked with nearly every major sponsor and most major investigations in Alzheimer’s disease. As of the summer of 2023, Lecanemab was FDA approved.

LEQEMBI is indicated for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment with LEQEMBI should be initiated in patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia stage of disease, the population in which treatment was initiated in clinical trials.  ANA within the Philadelphia metropolitan is on the forefront for LEQEMBI infusions; being one of the highest volume providers of this groundbreaking treatment.

We have one EMG machine and 4 Video EEG Machines.

We are looking for high-quality adult neurologists interested in making their home in the area and staying with our growing practice for the long term.  ANA establishes a defined partnership track of three years through the initial employment contract.

While new employees are not official voting members of the organization, they are included in all partnership meetings.  ANA’s goal is to be transparent and inclusive with all employed physicians with the full intention of transitioning to partnership after year three of employment.

Philadelphia is a very “rich” community, both medically and culturally. There are four medical schools, and we have excellent and collaborative relationships with the area academic and private practice neurologists. This provides us access to further specialty care in epilepsy, MS, movement disorders, etc., when required. The Philadelphia Neurological Society has been meeting for over 125 years.

The city is home to a world-class orchestra and art museum, numerous galleries, theaters, dance troupes, athletic teams, and some of the best restaurants in the country. Rich in history, the nation’s first capital is home to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and other historic sites. The prestigious University of Pennsylvania is also located in Philadelphia. New York City and Washington, D.C. are easily accessible by car, train, or bus.

Abington is a middle- to upper-middle-class community. The housing market remains relatively underpriced as the current range for acceptable housing is $350,000 to $650,000, though there are more and less expensive homes in the area. You will find the overall cost of living as well as housing prices are more reasonable as compared to New York, Boston, Washington, D.C. or San Francisco.  There are excellent public schools in the area as well as many fine private schools. The Quakers created a strong educational legacy, which continues today.

Several of Abington Neurological Associates’ physicians are actively involved in leadership within the Pennsylvania Neurological Society and the American Academy of Neurology. This gives us a direct voice in addressing state and national issues affecting neurology.

We believe this accurately describes Abington Neurological Associates. It is difficult to convey the many advantages of being part of our practice: the loyalty we each feel toward the practice, our close working relationships, family atmosphere, our spectacular staff, the connection to an excellent hospital, and wonderful patients who appreciate what we do.
