The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Neurology has an opening for tenure track position in Alzheimer’s disease research. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, nationally known program in Alzheimer’s disease, building on the resources of the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute (WAI) and the NIH-funded Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC). The faculty member will collaborate within a multi-departmental program that includes faculty in neurology, neuropsychology, geriatrics, the WAI and the ADRC. Additional research collaborations involve the UW Health Innovations Program, the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, and multiple departments and schools across campus.
The pre-eminent Alzheimer’s disease research at UW Madison focuses on pre-clinical identification of risk factors and biomarkers based on two diverse longitudinal cohorts enrolling a total of approximately 1800 middle aged adults, with follow-up for over 15 years (WAI WRAP and ADRC IMPACT). Data include CSF, imaging and cognitive biomarkers. Ancillary studies with collaborators are exploring metabolomics, genomics, vascular risk factors, microbiome, genetics, and exercise, and their relationships with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Emerging research areas include health disparities, clinical care, community-based care, and health services, building on an outstanding array of resources in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin, and across the state. Health disparity programs are based out of the WAI Milwaukee Regional Office, which provides culturally appropriate services for adults with Alzheimer’s and their families, hosting workshops and screenings to promote prevention, while simultaneously recruiting individuals from communities of color for the WRAP and other research studies. Other resources are available through the ADRC, which has extensive outreach programs to the African American communities in Dane County. Both the WAI and the ADRC work with Wisconsin’s tribes.
Resources for clinical and health services research include WAI’s Dementia Diagnostic Clinic Network, a network of 32 dementia diagnostic clinics across Wisconsin. Through these clinics, approximately 2000 patients with cognitive complaints are assessed annually using standardized protocols. Clinics collect de-identified data on each patient visit, providing a rich resource from which to launch health services and clinical research related to Alzheimer’s disease. Resources and opportunities for collaboration also exist with other health services programs housed at ADRC and the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.
Research in community-based care is facilitated by the recent establishment of the Wisconsin Dementia Resource Network, run through WAI. The Wisconsin Dementia Resource Network connects providers of community-based dementia care services across the state, including the Alzheimer’s Association chapters, state funded dementia care specialists, and members of community and county-level dementia coalitions. This network provides an extraordinary resource from which to recruit for clinical trials, or conduct research in community-based programs, including in caregiver support, early memory loss, and more. Multiple opportunities for collaboration exist through a number of community-academic networks throughout campus.
The University of Wisconsin is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, and seeks diverse candidates for this position. The successful candidate will play a leadership role in developing an independent, extramurally-funded Alzheimer’s research program within the Department of Neurology and WAI. The faculty should be a neurologist with training and expertise in an area of Alzheimer’s disease research. He/she is expected to build on the resources available within WAI and also across campus. Areas of focus in Alzheimer’s disease research may include, but are not limited to, vascular disease, health disparities, clinical care, health services research, and community-based programming. Clinical activities will involve attending duties one day per week in outpatient Alzheimer’s clinics at the UW Health clinics, Veterans Memorial Hospital or other locations. Teaching responsibilities include teaching medical student courses and clerkship, mentoring graduate students and trainees, training residents, fellows and medical students and teaching continuing education programs for physicians, neuropsychologists and the public.
The city of Madison is a diverse, beautiful, and vibrant mid-size city with activities including multicultural events, campus and community sports, outdoor recreation activities, and the arts.
