Description

The Department of Neurology at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University is seeking physician-scientists with basic and translational research interests to join a multidisciplinary team interested in developing and applying neuroimaging technologies to the study of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The position is tenure-eligible and successful candidates will be appointed at either assistant or associate professor level, and will receive space and startup funds commensurate with experience and achievement.

Competitive candidates will lead a robust basic or translational research program and will serve as mentors to research and clinical trainees from affiliate institutional departments. As such, appointees must have experience conducting bench or translational research, have a track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and demonstrate success securing extramural funding. Exceptional opportunities exist to collaborate with faculty from the Departments of Neurobiology & Behavior, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, among other departments across the health science and undergraduate campuses. Stony Brook is host to an array of core services, including small animal MRI, uCT, and PET imaging facilities on the ground floor of the Renaissance School of Medicine campus. Moreover, Neurobiology & Behavior has established the Thomas Hartman Center for PD Research, awarding pilot research funding to over 20 faculty researchers in different basic and clinical departments across SBU. Stony Brook is also on the cutting edge of developing novel PET imaging approaches to uncover the fundamental underpinnings of neuropsychiatric conditions.

Candidates can have experience conducting basic, translational, or clinical research and should have a demonstrated track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and with success in securing extramural funding. Applicants with clinical training in adult or child neurology will be appointed in the relevant clinical division and will provide clinical coverage in inpatient and outpatient services. They will also contribute to the educational mission by mentoring research trainees and teaching and supervising medical students, residents, and fellows.

Comprised of the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, and Neurobiology and Behavior, The Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute hosts several cross-disciplinary clinical programs. Coupled with outstanding preclinical and translational research programs, the Department of Neurology is host to adult and child neurology residency programs and fellowships in cerebrovascular, epilepsy, neurophysiology, and neuroimmunology. SBU is a Comprehensive Stroke Center providing 24/7 coverage for neuro-endovascular procedures, neurocritical care ICU support, and neurovascular neurosurgery. The Movement Disorders team collaborates closely with the Departments of Neurosurgery and Psychiatry to support deep brain stimulation, tic disorders, and other multidisciplinary programs.
