The AAMC has broadened the definition of URiM in medicine to include “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population”. Underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in medicine are African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders. The AAMC’s definition also includes intersectionality for male and female individuals of color, with race and gender contributing distinct experiences when confronting privilege and power in academic medicine.
