THE POSITION: The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader for the position of Neuroscience Scientific Diversity Officer to serve as the Institute’s senior leader responsible for planning, catalyzing, and promoting strategies to support diversity and inclusion in the neuroscience workforce. The Neuroscience Scientific Diversity Officer will oversee the Institute’s myriad intramural and extramural research diversity activities, spanning the training pipeline from innovative neuroscience education outreach programs to funding opportunities and important mentoring networks across critical career transition points (from undergraduate up to junior faculty). The incumbent’s scope will span the three divisions of the Institute (extramural, intramural, and the Office of the Director) by assuring development and implementation of strategies tailored to the mission and culture of each organizational component, but all aligned toward an overall scientific and administrative strategic plan. These strategies can include initiatives aimed at NINDS scientific and administrative staff, as well as bold efforts focusing on the extramurally funded workforce. The individual will develop and implement ideas, in a highly collaborative fashion, to ensure that NINDS opens pathways through creative programs for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees in an effort to attract and retain the best and most diverse scientists to careers in neuroscience. In addition, the individual will catalyze efforts across the NIH through their leadership for extramural trans-NIH neuroscience scientific workforce diversity programs such as the NIH Blueprint to Advance Neuroscience and the Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies^® (BRAIN) Initiative, and through their leadership for intramural programs in the Porter Neuroscience Research Center, which houses neuroscientists from 10 institutes and centers across the NIH. The Neuroscience Scientific Diversity Officer will report to the Director, NINDS.

  QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Experience obtained in either the private or public sector, which includes planning, implementing, and evaluating scientific diversity initiatives conducted by a neuroscience research organization.

• Applicants must assess scientific diversity practices and guiding leadership to help foster inclusion/collaboration across a neuroscience research program; Applicants must evaluate neuroscience research to identify any scientific diversity issues; Applicants must implement policies/programs to promote an equitable culture across an organization that employs a more diverse scientific community, and leading scientific diversity objectives, policies, and activities to improve research quality and equity in research funding in neuroscience, neurology, or related biomedical research.
