Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine (SOM) in Richmond, Virginia, seeks a physician leader to serve as the inaugural Director of the Neurohospitalist Service. This is a newly created leadership opportunity, developed to ensure the highest level of care and outcomes for patients with neurological disorders admitted to the VCU Health System’s (VCUHS) inpatient facilities.

The mission of the Department of Neurology at VCU is to provide the best patient-centered neurological care in a curious and academically rich environment while supporting the career development and engagement of all team members including faculty, APPs, staff, and learners. With more than 50 faculty members, the rapidly growing and dynamic department provides a high level of expertise for the full breadth of neurological conditions affecting adults and children.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Neurology, the Director will be responsible for establishing and leading a Neurohospitalist Service that will provide inpatient neurology and neurology consultation services throughout the health system, including the VCU Hospital in Richmond, and teleconsultation services to regional hospitals in South Hill and Tappahannock, and an Emergency Room in New Kent.

In addition to ensuring excellent clinical care, the Director of the Neurohospitalist Service will be responsible for leadership across all missions, including supporting faculty development, education, and research. The Director will support diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values in excellent inpatient care and all leadership decisions.

Qualifications

The Director must be a strategic thinker with strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to listen and respond to a broad range of perspectives.

Additionally, they must have: 

  • An MD/DO, with residency training at an accredited institution.
  • Eligibility for licensure in Virginia and board certification or board eligible in Neurology, and at least 3-5 years of experience as a neurohospitalist.
  • Fellowship training is preferred.
  • Understanding of, and appreciation for, the three missions of research, education, and clinical care as it applies to inpatient and acute neurological care in the context of academic medicine.
  • A strategic orientation that looks to collect, analyze, and act on relevant data to make thoughtful and equitable decisions for immediate action and long-term plans in clinical operations and quality initiatives.
  • Strong leadership ability and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage colleagues within the health system more broadly.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
