The Search
The next CEO will inherit a thriving and high-functioning enterprise, at once in strong financial standing and operationally lean, having been wholly optimized to deliver on its mission. Since 1935, over 90,000 physicians have been certified through ABPN, and each year 2,000 are added to the ranks. The next leader will be charged with building on these solid foundations as the organization looks to the future.
Within the specialties of psychiatry and neurology, this is one of the most prominent positions in the country. ABPN has the power to influence the field as a whole by shaping how physicians are certified and defining the competencies and standards of excellence as the field evolves. The next CEO must be a forward-facing leader eager to wield this influence, but also a deft institutional steward who can anticipate and tackle yet-unseen and changing circumstances and priorities. Reporting to and working alongside the ABPN Board of Directors and with the support of the staff, the CEO will ensure that certification and continuing certification programs and processes stay at the cutting edge, maintain the strong financial position of the organization, support a terrific staff, build and diversify an excellent board of directors, and cultivate and strengthen critical external relationships.
The next CEO is expected to be chosen in the summer of 2022, with the selected candidate formally taking office on January 1, 2023. Upon joining, the new CEO will immediately be met with the task of implementing new American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) standards. The ideal candidate should bring considerable administrative experience, experience with medical education and certification at all levels. They will also have outstanding leadership and people management skills, be an exceptional listener and communicator, and have an unyielding commitment to standards of excellence in health care.
