DIRECTOR NEUROSCIENCE PROGRAM

SUMMARY / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives through patient-focused scientific research. Their brand-new state of the art laboratory anchors the biomedical corridor on Fair Oaks in Pasadena. Their scientists' research focuses on the connection between the brain and heart, developing diagnostic tools and treatments to help treat common diseases of these vital organs that affect every family.

HMRI seeks a mid-career level clinical scientist with expertise in cognitive neurology and neurosciences to set up an independent research program at HMRI. Late assistant professor level or early associate professor level investigators. Must be a board certified neurologist with excellent clinical neurologic skills and have an MD, a California medical license or eligible. Must have a record of publications in peer reviewed journals and have some level of grant funding, preferably from the NIH or other federal or state agency. Must be willing to collaborate with other scientists in the institution. They are seeking a candidate with excellent communication skills who can speak to both a scientific audience as well as a non-scientific audience. Emphasis is on scientific integrity, transparency and rigor. A competitive start up package will be offered.

The Director of the Neuroscience Program will be responsible for heading up a large ongoing Brain Aging study that sees elderly participants that may be cognitively healthy, have MCI or frank dementia including AD as well as other dementias (for example, vascular, Lewy Body). The study participants are followed longitudinally with histories, physicals, lumbar punctures for tau and amyloid levels, MRIs, EEGs, EEGs with mental stress testing, neuropsychological testing and other tests.  The Director would also conduct a monthly clinical consensus conference that determines level of cognitive dysfunction after reviewing the data on each participant.   This program has been long running at HMRI with current foundation and NIH funding to support the study. The candidate would supervise at least 2 other researchers  (one an MD/PhD the other a PHD); one who is an expert in EEGs and the other who is an expert in lipid abnormalities in blood and urine of AD patients.

The Director will carry out independent as well as collaborative research in the neurology and neurosciences field. This position reports to the Chief Science Officer.

PREREQUISITES

  • Doctoral Degree (MD) or equivalent, with a Calfiornia medical license or eligible, with more than five years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Track record of independent research funding, preferably NIH, DOD, or other grants;
  • Computer skills required (Microsoft Office). Use of Computers to collect various data sets; must know power point, excel spreadsheets, statistical analyses
  • Desirable to have experience with small animal models of neurologic disease and/or experience with in vitro cell-based models, molecular biology, and in genetics 
  • A history of publications 
  • Excellent general knowledge of neuroscience research. 
  • Desirable to have experience with small animal studies of neurologic diseases , molecular biology, and genetics
  • Must be willing to serve on some administrative committees.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and prospects, building respect, consensus and trust across reporting lines; and
  • Also performs a wide range of job duties as assigned and requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervisory responsibilities include supervision of at least two scientists, at least one technician, postdoctoral fellows, and students.
