The successful applicant will be a passionate and innovative medical educator, with relevant experience to become the next Residency Program Director for a 5-year old Neurology residency program. The successful applicant will continue to lead this successful program to even greater heights.

The position includes an appointment at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine at the rank of Clinical Assistant, Associate, or Professor based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Clinical responsibilities include patient care at Carilion Medical Center (CMC), an 835-bed teaching academic health center and at the Ambulatory Clinics at Carilion Riverside campus, both in Roanoke, Virginia.  Carilion Neurology is currently undergoing expansion under the new Chief and positions are available for neurologists with a variety of subspecialty training, including epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders, and multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology, among others. Carilion Neurology providers are comprised of 13 adult neurologists and 4 mid-level providers, complemented by 3 Pediatric Neurologists and 4 Adult neurologists at VAMC, Salem, Virginia. We are the regional leader in providing advanced care for neurological disorders. CMC is designated as a Primary Stroke Center (with the AHA Gold Seal of Approval) and is the only Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Program in southwestern Virginia.

The Program Director is expected to be a leader capable of directing the education of neurology residents with oversight and responsibility of core faculty and the corresponding budget. This position includes 30% protected time and works closely with a full-time experienced program manager. The residency program is supported by a well-functioning and supportive GME office and DIO. The successful applicant must have an MD/DO with requisite training, a minimum of three years of experience in residency administration/education, and a demonstrated track record of education excellence. Preference will be given to applicants whose vision for residency training aligns with the Carilion Clinic neurology mission of harnessing our unique geography, diverse patient population, and innovative health care delivery model to train physician-leaders who excel in any setting and are dedicated to their patients and community through compassion, humility, education and service.

The Carilion Neurology Residency program is a categorical program approved for 12 residents (3 per year) and is based at CMC. Residents also rotate through VA medical center at Salem, providing a wide range of experiences.  Our residency program is integrated with the Internal Medicine Residency Program at CMC for the PGY‑1 year of training. The neurology residents have performed well above the national mean for the in-training examination and the graduates have entered fellowship training or joined faculty at an academic institution. The faculty and residents in Neurology come from diverse backgrounds and have varied subspecialty expertise. The neurology team at CMC consists of learners of different levels, e.g., M3/M4 medical students from VTCSOM, rotators from other CMC residency programs, nursing, and other allied health students from Carilion Radford University. Carilion Clinic along with partners was awarded a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health. The neurology faculty are supported by grants from various sources including the Carilion Foundation, CTSA, NSF, and industry-funded and investigator initiated clinical trials. The research infrastructure is well supported by Carilion Research and Development. The faculty involved in bench research have dual appointments in the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, a $200M translational research center on campus.
