Position Description

We are searching for a division chief to lead a vibrant, diverse, and internationally recognized stroke division within the department of neurology at Vanderbilt University. As a growing division, a key priority for the new leader is to bring mentorship and academic opportunities for junior faculty. In additional to excelling in clinical vascular neurology, we are interested in recruiting an individual with a national reputation in the basic neurosciences or public health research, a track record of excellence in clinical trials, or critical care expertise.

Division Overview

The stroke division was founded 22 years ago by Dr. Howard Kirshner. We have twelve faculty including a pediatric stroke specialist, a neurology-trained neurointerventionalist, a basic science lab, two clinical trial specialists, and two education specialists. The inpatient services include both stroke and general neurology and operates a 23 bed Neuro-ICU, 12 bed step-down unit, and 47 bed ward (including 8 beds in an epilepsy monitoring unit). We treat 125 ischemic strokes, 30 intracerebral hemorrhages, and 10 transient ischemic attacks, including an average of 18 tPA administrations and 8 thrombectomies per month. There is an additional inpatient service at the adjacent Veterans Administration Hospital and a substantial service line via teleneurology. Vanderbilt is the hub for ten regional stroke centers and community hospitals. Approximately 50% of teleneurology calls are stroke related. Our model is to enable as many patients as possible to remain in the community hospitals and our current transfer rate is only 14%.

Research

The division is academically very strong with substantial grant funding. Dr. Kenneth Gaines was awarded a $15.7 grant from the PCORI Board to study technology assisted integration of stroke care from the pre-hospital phase to 1-year post-stroke in an important clinical trial called the C3FIT. Dr. Eva Mistry is funded by a K23 and is the PI of the BEST study evaluating the optimal blood pressure target after mechanical thrombectomy. Dr. Matthew Schrag conducts basic science research as a K76-funded Beeson Scholar studying the interaction between cerebral small vessel disease and cognitive impairment related to Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Lori Jordan was awarded an R01 studying pediatric stroke with a focus on sickle cell anemia. She also holds a K24 award for mentorship. The division is closely linked to the Vanderbilt Memory and Alzheimer’s Center which has a primary focus on the contribution of vascular disease to neurodegenerative disorders. This group is home to numerous R01-funded investigators and follows a large clinical cohort. Finally, our clinical team has strong participation in clinical trials.
