Division Chair for Vascular and Critical Care Neurology

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a physician leader to serve as Division Chair for Vascular and Critical Care Neurology in the Department of Neurology.

The Division of Vascular and Critical Care Neurology provides the highest level of evidence-based care, offering state-of-the-art treatment for patients with cerebrovascular disorders and those requiring care in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. The VCU Stroke Center, Virginia’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center certified by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), serves as a major tertiary and quaternary referral center for patients in the Commonwealth and beyond. The Division is dedicated to continuing to invest in its research mission while providing excellent education for medical students, residents, and fellows.

The Division Chair for Vascular and Critical Care Neurology will report to the Chair of the Department of Neurology and maintain an active clinical practice while leading the Division. The Division Chair will oversee budgeting, staffing, recruitment, and planning. They will maintain a close collaborative relationship with health system leadership and colleagues from many departments throughout the Health System involved in the care of patients with cerebrovascular disease. 

The Division Chair will lead the development and implementation of educational and research programs in collaboration with other neuroscience focused departments. The Chair will be responsible for leading growth in VCU’s clinical trial and clinical and translational portfolio in vascular and critical care neurology, including leading VCU’s participation in StrokeNet.

Qualifications  

The Division Chair for Vascular and Critical Neurology must be a strategic thinker with strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to listen and respond to a broad range of perspectives.

Additionally, they must have: 

• An MD/DO, with residency training at an accredited institution.
• Eligibility for licensure in Virginia and board certification or board eligible in Neurology.
• Fellowship training and board certification in Vascular Neurology care is preferred.
• Understanding of, and appreciation for, the three missions of research, education, and clinical care as it applies to Vascular and Critical Care Neurology in the context of academic medicine.
• A strategic orientation that looks to collect, analyze, and act on relevant data to make thoughtful decisions for immediate action and long-term plans in clinical operations and quality initiatives.
• Strong leadership ability and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage colleagues within Vascular and Critical Care Neurology, the Neurology Department, and the health system more broadly.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
